Courses offered at Diane Southwell Jewellery

Courses are offered to students who wish to learn jewellers’ skills to develop their own designs, set up businesses, combine beading with silver, to prepare for apprenticeships or full time course applications, or as a relaxing hobby. Sawing, soldering, filing, fusing and chain making are just some of the topics taught in these practical, hands on courses.

Private classes of 3 students in fully equipped, ergonomic workshop allows you personalised tuition for all aspects of the skills of jewellery making. Courses range from 4 to 12 week courses, with discounts for longer course work.

Introductory Course

Students begin by learning fundamental sawing, filing, forming and polishing of pendants, rings and bangles. Sterling silver pieces are made to your design or a classic and traditional shape and lasts many generations of wearing.

Continuing Course

Jewellery making classes for students who have completed the introductory course to further develop design, accurate soldering, filing, continued and more detailed sawing, sweat soldering, fusing and chain making.

Manufacturing and stone setting is taught after basic skills are achieved. Cuttle casting, jump ring making, shepherd hook, bail and fob manufacture are also learned. Jump ring manufacture taught as a vital component of jewellery making. The first project involves chain making and soldering jumprings using precisely timed soldering.

Specialised Courses

Specialised courses are also available for specific interests, such as bezel, claw, bead and pressure gem setting. Enamel workshops are also offered and further specialised workshops are included as tutors are located. These are offered to students who wish to extend their talents.

Inaugural Silversmith Course

The inaugural Silversmith course being held at Fullarton Park Centre will commence in August. The course will be held in the century old art studio, the former coach house at the centre on Fullarton Road. A wisteria covered walkway leads to the studio in the treed grounds of the centre.
